Dick Quis recently gave a talk at an innovative three-day bilingual prison retreat with a touch of mime and music. The program, called Residents Encounter Christ, was conducted at the Marana Community Correctional Treatment Facility, a private Arizona State prison near Tucson, that provides custody and substance abuse treatment for 500 adult male inmates. Here’s Quis’ presentation:

It’s a simple message “Stay Away.” But what if we added a line “Pray For Them.” Do you think the prayers of a thousand passing motorist could help you recover faster? The deal: clean freeways for recovery prayers.
Are we in the right place? Are we where we are supposed to be? The desert. The Sonoran Desert in Marana, Arizona. Can we find wisdom here? Can we recover here? Is God here or does He favor tropical Islands? Do we need the art works of the Sistine Chapel to inspire us to talk to Christ or will the prison chapel or your cell suffice? Is the Marana Community Correctional Treatment Facility a place where modern miracles happen or are miracles reserved for the ancients? Who among us has been healed and is no longer afflicted by substance abuse cravings? Have you or someone you know participated in a miracle? Did this miracle happen right next to you and you didn’t see or hear it happen? How do they know it was a miracle and not their own willpower?
I just moved to the desert from Southern California in April. I’m a retired CPA with particular interest in helping people buy and sell businesses, an artist and author. I have worked in 15 countries and I like to tell people I’m bi-coastal – having grown up in New York City . . . the reason for my accent . . . and lived the last 40 years in California. I have survived a major heart attack, three tangles with cancer – bladder and prostate and 22 surgeries. Despite Tucson being rated as one of the top five places in the United States to retire, people often ask me “Why I picked Tucson?” During the summer I say “I want to get purgatory out of the way before I die.” Other times I say “Like Moses and Jesus Christ, I’m seeking wisdom from the time I spend in the desert.” However, I am now leaning to the words I heard on Arizona Illustrated “You don’t pick the desert, the desert picks you.” I find the desert fascinating. I first visited the desert from New York in February 1968 and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I’m drawn to the desert and want to learn its survival and growth skills despite the lack of abundant resources.” Remember, substance abusers have been coming to the desert for many years . . . and will pay dearly for the privilege. Just look at the rates overeaters will pay at your sister facility across town at Canyon Ranch.
I use the term miracle because recovery is a mystery and by definition, a mystery can’t be explained. The terms magic, wish, spell just don’t seem, for me, to describe what we are trying to do here. Neither I, nor you, can create a miracle but what we can hopefully show you and what you need to do is create the circumstances that will let you invite a miracle into your life.
Now how do you do that? It’s simple and not a secret. But simple is hard to do. The twelve-step process works. Prayer works. Lack of resources is rarely the issue. The methodology, the tools, God, the clinicians, priests and healed prisoners are all here. Now it’s up to you to take this desert wisdom so you can create the inner thoughts and words that will bring you to Christ and redemption. What you are seeking is a transformative miracle – a gift from God – to become who you are meant to be. The new you, free of unhealthy cravings practicing the secret of success – helping others get what they want. Remember, it’s your uniqueness that attracts people and your ability to solve problems for others.
You can do this. With Christ anything is possible. And when you are successful – a life without cravings – will simply happen and don’t worry, you won’t be asked to wear a halo over your head when this is all over.
We all learn differently. Some people learn best verbally, others need to see the written word while others have to bare witness . . . to touch, to feel, to see how others are healing – put the hand in the wound. Knowing how we learn is important. If you struggle with how you learn to master a task, try watching a child play. With play comes knowledge. It’s important to get your ego out of the process. The play words that children use are not “abracadabra,” “alakazan,” or “presto chango” but “what if”, “let’s pretend”, “suppose.” He/she plays with it, finds alternative uses and eventually masters the task. Time is your friend. Use it to pray, over study and practice, practice, practice.
Humans are very powerful but we must realize we have faults. We must accept we are not rational beings. It’s part of the human condition. We must learn to deal with our own insanity and realize others have done whatever you have done. What you are doing or what you are not doing is not unique to you. Being embarrassed never helps anyone get the help they need. Your ego is what keeps you from reconciliation and healing. You must learn to get out of your own way so God can do His thing.
It’s important when praying for a miracle that you clearly state your needs, then do the best you can under the circumstances. My favorite daily modern miracle prayer format is as follows:
On the day of the miracle I was delighted and surprised to learn what God had done for me. Jesus, I know I need to stay out of your way but wouldn’t it be nice if I was able to say something that brings substance abusers to you, that I know your will for me, that I find creative ways to engage the world and not fear praise or criticism, that I find clients who need my services, that I attract whatever is needed to erase all my financial difficulties and open the door to unlimited possibilities, that I learn to let go of whatever doesn’t serve me and that I am able to hear your steps resounding through events. Thank you, Christ Jesus, for doing all this for me. Jesus please resolve this in a way that is right for me.
Hopefully over the last few days we have been able to improve your spiritual intelligence. You have been introduced to a wise man bearing gifts. Now you have to ask for His help.

Ni yo ni tú podemos crear un milagro, pero lo que esperamos poder mostrarte y lo que debes hacer es crear las circunstancias que te permitan invitar un milagro a tu vida. ¿Ahora cómo haces eso? Es simple y no es un secreto. Pero simple es difícil de hacer. El proceso de doce pasos funciona. La oración funciona. La falta de recursos rara vez es el problema. La metodología, las herramientas, Dios, los clínicos, los sacerdotes y los prisioneros curados están aquí. Ahora depende de ti tomar esta sabiduría del desierto para que puedas crear los pensamientos y palabras internos que te llevarán a Cristo y a la redención. Lo que estás buscando es un milagro transformador, un regalo de Dios, para convertirte en quien estás destinado a ser. El nuevo tú, libre de antojos insanos practicando el secreto del éxito, ayudando a otros a obtener lo que quieren. Recuerde, es su singularidad lo que atrae a las personas y su capacidad de resolver problemas para otros. Puedes hacerlo. Con Cristo todo es posible. Y cuando tenga éxito, una vida sin antojos, simplemente sucederá y no se preocupe, no se le pedirá que use un halo sobre su cabeza cuando todo esto termine.
Todos aprendemos de manera diferente. Algunas personas aprenden mejor verbalmente, otras necesitan ver la palabra escrita, mientras que otras tienen que ser testigos. . . tocar, sentir, ver cómo se curan los demás: poner la mano en la herida. Saber cómo aprendemos es importante. Si te cuesta cómo aprendes a dominar una tarea, trata de ver a un niño jugar. Con el juego viene el conocimiento. Es importante sacar tu ego del proceso. Las palabras de juego que usan los niños no son “abracadabra”, “alakazan” o “presto chango”, sino “qué pasaría si”, “imaginemos”, “supongamos”. Juega con él, encuentra usos alternativos y finalmente domina la tarea. El tiempo es tu amigo. Úselo para orar, estudiar y practicar, practicar, practicar.
Los humanos son muy poderosos pero debemos darnos cuenta de que tenemos fallas. Debemos aceptar que no somos seres racionales. Es parte de la condición humana. Debemos aprender a lidiar con nuestra propia locura y darnos cuenta de que otros han hecho lo que tú has hecho. Lo que estás haciendo o lo que no estás haciendo no es exclusivo de ti. Estar avergonzado nunca ayuda a nadie a obtener la ayuda que necesita. Tu ego es lo que te impide la reconciliación y la curación. Debes aprender a salir de tu propio camino para que Dios pueda hacer lo suyo.
Cuando oras por un milagro, es importante que declares claramente tus necesidades y luego hagas lo mejor que puedas bajo las circunstancias. Mi formato de oración de milagro moderno diario favorito es el siguiente:
El día del milagro, estaba encantado y sorprendido de saber lo que Dios había hecho por mí. Jesús, sé que necesito mantenerme fuera de tu camino, pero ¿no sería bueno si pudiera decir algo que te traiga abuso de sustancias, que conozca tu voluntad para mí, que encuentre formas creativas de involucrar al mundo? y no temer los elogios o las críticas, que encuentro clientes que necesitan mis servicios, que atraigo lo que sea necesario para borrar todas mis dificultades financieras y abrir la puerta a posibilidades ilimitadas, que aprendo a soltar lo que no me sirve y que puedo escuchar tus pasos resonando a través de los eventos. Gracias, Cristo Jesús, por hacer todo esto por mí. Jesús, por favor resuelve esto de una manera que sea adecuada para mí.
